Happy Halloween

Many years ago I dressed up as a pirate for Halloween. Yes, this is what I wore to work that day.

The three witches

"Double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble."  (from Shakespeare's Macbeth)

No, this isn't witches brew but some could say it is a magic potion.  It's chicken soup cooked over an open fire at the Hay Creek Apple Festival in Morgantown, PA.   Chicken soup - good for the soul, good for what ails you.

We bought some of the soup to take home and it was delicious.

Tis the season . . .

. . . to carve pumpkins.  We opted not to carve one this year but decorated one, just the same.

When the world was young . . .

Note the 3-volume encyclopedia from the 1860's.   How many volumes does it take to contain the world of knowledge today?  The last set of encyclopedias I had growing up must have had close to 30 volumes and was purchased from a door-to-door salesman.  When was the last time you saw one of those?  Fuller Brush anyone?  Avon calling?

Gotta love flea markets in the country.  You never know what you'll find.

Old time manufacturing

This is how brooms were made before mass production.  With the economy in a slump, maybe we'll be heading back to this way of doing things.

A barrel of laughs . . .

I never rode in a ride like this as a kid but they seem to be popular at country fairs.

Some kids never grow up.

Flax

Johnny Appleseed

An apple festival just wouldn't be complete without Johnny Appleseed.  Not sure what he had in his bag but I never saw him take his hand out of it.

Sign for the times . . .

With the economy in turmoil, more people may return to hunting for their food.  Squirrel, anyone?

Circa 1938

This is a photo of my grandmother and my mom as a youngster. Note the coat, hat and shoes that my grandmother is wearing. But, what I like about this photo even more is the shadow of my grandfather in the image.

Dipping into the oldies . . .

So, we were driving from Inverness to Aberdeen, Scotland, when we saw a sign for the Glenlivet Distillery.  We made a sharp left and as we were winding around the pastures, in the middle of nowhere we found a telephone booth.  There must have been a need for one if there was one there but who uses it and how often?  This was a few years ago so I wonder if it is even there still?   Hmmmm . . . guess we need to make another trip to Scotland to check it out.

One from the archives . . .

This is a final project from my Graphic Design 1 class.  The project was to create a 4-stamp series for the Tour de France.  It was a lot of work but also a lot of fun.
